Community Commitment

At Merrick Jamieson, we are committed to helping people. The work we do frequently extends beyond our practice and into our Nova Scotian and Canadian community. We believe we have been very fortunate in our lives and our careers, and we make it our responsibility to give back.

Our community volunteerism takes many forms. John Merrick has a long track record of participation in such organizations as Public Legal Education Society, and reachAbility Nova Scotia. Scott Sterns' work for refugees earned him the Canadian Bar Association's Pro Bono Award. Darlene Jamieson's work with organizations that promote equality for Canadian women earned her the YWCA Women's Recognition Award, the Frances Fish Women's Achievement Award and the Elizabeth Fry Rebel With A Cause Award. J Washington and Bill Mahody have coached youth sports and volunteered with Special Olympics and the Boys and Girls Club.

The bottom line is that doing this work makes us better people and better lawyers. But what drives us is advocacy - assisting those who need help the most but who are frequently the least likely to get help because of financial and social barriers.

Our goal is to "Participate in and encourage the participation of others in community activities aimed at bettering our society".

"THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN INDUSTRY AND A PROFESSION IS THAT IN INDUSTRY YOU WORK TO MAKE A PROFIT, WHEREAS IN A PROFESSION YOU MAKE A PROFIT SO THAT YOU CAN WORK."
